Embark on a journey back to the viking age! Let us take you back to the viking and medieval ages! There will be show and entertainment, food and trading, just like it was 1000 years ago. Bring friends and family to the festival - it is suitable for everyone.
Ever since the Viking time Bergen has been a town for trading and shipping. Olav Kyrre, who founded the city in 1070, was known as the “trading king” because trade purposes were what he put most emphasis on. Hird and warriors would still have to defend the city.
Bjorgvin Marknad is about living history in which people can participate in the Viking life as far as possible in our society. Here you will see craftsmen and artists from several countries, all showing authentic products, music and other entertainment. Lots of great things to see and buy. Lectures on Viking time and medieval period will be held by knowledgeable people. Storytelling and role play for children of all ages is also on the program. In addition, we present a historical food and answering questions about it. Exhibitors must be dressed in authentic clothing. During the festival, we live as Vikings did in the historic tents.
Hordamuseet provides a great setting for the market. There are old houses and picturesque surroundings. Viking ship Håkon Håkonson is docked and are helping to create the whole picture. One can have a nice trip on the fjord with the ship.
Battle Groups have shows and you can try your hand at archery and other competitions. Bjorgvin Marknad does its best to take the audience on a journey 1000 years back in time in a way where you can participate in a lot of what we do and that way experience a piece of Viking time during our market.
Bjorgvin Marknad was established in 2003 and had its first festival in 2004. The first festival was held on Fløyen (one of the 7 mountains around Bergen) and consisted of 3-4 tents and about twenty participants. The festival grew bigger and moved to Hordamuseet in 2008. In 2010 there were about 35 living history tents and participants from, inter alia, Denmark, Sweden, Poland and Norway. The club is run by volunteers and the market is also arranged on a voluntary basis. There have been about 3000 visitors on every marked over the past years.
Bring your family and friends and come to Hordamuseet!
